Leitrim Animal Welfare was established in 1997 by Christine Coulson and the Leitrim Animal Welfare Committee. Leitrim Animal Welfare took over the running of the Dog Pound for Co. Leitrim in May 2003, in conjunction with Leitrim County Council.

In 2003, 17,695 dogs were put to sleep in Irish dog pounds, a shocking fact considering the population of this country. It has long been Leitrim Animal Welfare's mission to change this culture of destruction. Leitrim Dog Pound became the first pound in Ireland to operate a “no-kill” policy, meaning no healthy dog in our care is ever put to sleep.

The centre takes in between 300-400 dogs and cats per year. The number of dogs and cats is currently increasing which means the centre needs to further develop and this puts extra pressure on our funding.
