Ruan Central National School Co Clare
Scoil Mhuire, Ruadhán is 500m from the historic village of Ruan, on the edge of the Burren.
The original primary school which dates back to 1833 was located beside the church and has since been remodelled and used as a Community Centre.
Scoil Mhuire was erected on its current site in 1977.
It is surrounded by agricultural land, has a south facing aspect and overlooks the beautifully renovated local church spire. South and West Clare are both visible from the school yard.
In 2009, our school building was extended to include one new classroom, a Special Education Teaching room and a PE hall. Existing classrooms, toilets, office and staffroom were also refurbished.
Including the Teaching Principal, Scoil Mhuire has four mainstream class teachers and a full-time Special Education Teacher (SET). A second SET post is shared with Corofin National School… Additionally, we have two Special Needs Assistants and a full-time secretary.
Adjacent to the school is Ruan Community Playgroup. In existence since early 1993, the facility is now modern, spacious and well-equipped. It has been a valuable asset in providing both before and after school care.
The immediate school grounds include a basketball court, an astro-turf enclosed area and a ‘soft pour’ play area for Infants.
The school grounds border an impressive local GAA Club pitch which we use for many of our P.E. and other outdoor activities.
Dromore Wood and lake, situated 3 kms from school, provides an excellent amenity while the recently opened Ballyteige Wood is a 5 minute walk away.
School Hall
We also have a school hall available in Scoil Mhuire Ruadhán. We get to enjoy indoor sports in the ‘halla’ on wet days and also use it to facilitate movement breaks on rainy days. We also enjoy Gymnastics in the halla, and use it for school plays and concerts.
Basketball Court
We have a basketball court available to us also. We play on this during yard, and use it at the end of the day to line up before being collected to go home.
Wet pore play surface
The Junior and Middle classes enjoy playing on our wet pore play surfaces during yard. This soft surface is ideal for the younger classes to play on. We also use it in the summer months for movement breaks and drama lessons.
Hurling and Camogie
We are very passionate about hurling and camogie in our school. Anne comes to the school to teach us the fundamental movements of sport and we practice running with the ball, catching the ball and hitting the ball from junior infants. We have a school team and we enjoy competing against local teams throughout the year.
